Hello neighbors!
There has been quite a bit of work completed across from the Pinefield entrance. You may have noticed the metal plates across Mattawoman Beantown Rd in front of the Pinefield entrance. Those are covering the sewage pipes that are being installed and connected. Once the inspection of the pipes is complete that area will be repaired with asphalt and another section will be dug and covered with metal plates. This will be for the installation of water pipes to run across the road.

I have contacted the Maryland SafeZones program addressing our concerns with speeding on MD-5 at the intersection.
I have also contacted Maryland SHA in regards to solutions with red light runners up to and including the installation of a Red Light Camera.

Service Request Description : We are requesting an investigation of crashes at the intersection of MD-5 Mattawoman Beantown Rd and Pinefield Rd. Since January 1st there have been 21 crashes at this intersection with 5 in the last month. These are due to multiple factors that include speeding and running the red light heading northbound. This intersection is now under construction making this even more perilous to the community and construction workers. We are requesting solutions to stop people from running the red light heading northbound on MD-5 up to and including the installation of a red light camera. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Service Request Description : Pole installation directly in front of our Pinefield Community Sign. I contacted SMECO and Charles County in regards to the markings and was informed by SMECO that they had no work in front of the sign. The County responded with this is the location of a temporary 32’ two-ply steel pole associated with the MD-5 Roadway Improvement Plan. The pole is to support a span wire which will traverse the intersection diagonally to support traffic signal heads and signage during the reconstruction of the intersection and new traffic signals. The temporary pole will be removed once the new signal becomes operational. In addition to a 10' pedestal pole with pedestrian signal head will be installed in the vicinity during final installation.

Thank you for your concern regarding traffic operations on MD 5 (Mattawoman Beantown Road) at the intersection with Pinefield Road in Charles County. The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) appreciates your interest and shares your concern for roadway safety.
In view of your comments, the traffic engineering division will investigate the issue at the subject location. Traffic engineering evaluations typically require data collection, site visits, analysis, review, and deliberation before arriving at final results. This type of review will take up to 90 days to complete. Once we have completed our investigation, we will share our results with you when they become available. We appreciate your patience as we work towards completing this review.
I spoke with Mr. White from the SHA District 5 office and informed him of our dropping the issue of the temporary traffic pole being installed in front of the Pinefield Sign due to the contractor guarantee to repair any damage to the greenery in the immediate vicinity of the Pinefield Sign. However, we would still like to pursue the installation location of the pedestal pole that will have the audible pedestrian signal device. Mr. White is forwarding that request to the appropriate office.
The picture below with the Pinefield sign shows the location of where a temporary pole that will hold the temporary traffic signal is going to be located. Work is due to commence within the next two weeks. The second photo shows the locations of the temporary traffic signal poles and work that will be done at the intersection and sidewalks. We are working with the supervisor of the construction site to address our concerns with the installation of any pole in front of our Pinefield Sign and address his concerns with traffic at and around the intersection.
